2010 History 2011 on the Horizon

March 8, 2010

Thanks to everyone that participated and volunteered this year! A great event put on by and for great people!
As with most things there was a down side to this year's event and we want to start making things as clear as we can.
The Half Marathon
Unfortunately there were approximately 80 people misdirected by the police department short of the 1/2 Marathon turnaround. This shortened the course by almost 1 mile for those folks.
Rather than penalizing anyone we created another event, the Half Marathon Short Course. We will award trophies to those individuals based on how they finished within that category.
The people that went the entire 13.1 will be awarded trophies as well.
Our volunteers were doing there jobs and tried to get people back on course but due to instructions given by the police stationed at that corner, many ended up cutting the course short.
We apologize for this and will make an even greater effort to make sure this situation does not repeat itself.
So check all results for your time and finish place and celebrate your accomplishment!

From a Soldiers Wife

February 12, 2010

“I am registered to do the half and so is my husband Gary (who will run in Iraq). I thought it would make it that much more special if we were able to do it “together” even from a distance, especially since he can’t be at the finish line to welcome me in. Where do I start? Running has been a true salvation for me during this deployment since it is such a great stress reliever. So often it was the only time I had alone during a busy day with the kids. For me personally, running has made me feel stronger not just physically but mentally as well, at a time when my mental strength is critical. When Gary came home for R&R (rest and recuperation leave of 2 weeks) I was going through a running wall and seeing him return to Iraq again didn’t make it any easier to get back out there. I did get back out there and I kept trying. Our unit left in early May, so after the stress and loneliness of the holidays, the deployment seemed almost over. I’m finally through the wall and I couldn’t be happier. Running with 3 kids has definitely not been easy but I bought a new stroller and have managed to fit it in where and when I could. I hope my thoughts can give some insight into how much running has helped me get through a year-long deployment by giving me something else to focus on, ME! As mothers and wives in general and even more as Army spouses, we so frequently forget to take care of ourselves and this has given me the ability to do it and enjoy it. I am very excited about the marathon but a bit nervous as well since the first 4-5 miles are pretty much uphill. I will definitely pray that we don’t have wind!!” –Cynthia
